Sanson Snippets

April 2010
This month's Snippets comes to you courtesy of Brooklyne Tearooms which will shortly have new owners. Elaine, Peter and their loyal staff invite you to join with them to celebrate their farewell from 9.30am to 4pm on Friday April 9th. There will be a bouncy castle for the children and goodies for the adults. They thank residents for their support over the last ten and a half years and have enjoyed the contact with you. Elaine and Peter will now be able to have a well deserved rest from all the stress that a busy café creates. The Café and Postal Centre will continue with the new owners and it will be interesting to see the changes that new owners bring.

CALTEX SERVICE STATION
For those of you wondering what's happening to this building I can report that I had a long chat to the owner the other day and it seems "very little in the meantime." He has had an on site meeting with Caltex reps 6 or 7 weeks ago and it is up to Caltex to restore the site to its former state when taken over in 1989. We will be getting regular updates as to progress. Would be great if some of these empty looking neglected buildings in our village had occupants!
With regard to the hotel building we await the consultant's report which is due out very shortly.

SANSON COMMUNITY COMMITTEE
At our meeting among other things we discussed the RAT problem and to ascertain how bad it really is we want those of you who have problems to either e-mail me on dondel@clear.net.nz or phone me on 3293674 and tell me your story. With the cooler weather vermin will be looking for a warm place to while away the winter. I have contacted Horizons Regional Council about this pesky sedge weed that is prevalent in the drains and is now spreading into pasture but am still waiting for a response.
We had a working bee to relime the Walking Track and intend to have another in the near future. If you are able to help please let me know and I will let you know the date and time. Thanks to Tim and James for their valiant efforts on a recent Saturday.
As there are local body elections coming up at the end of this year please think about standing for the Community Committee. I wish to stand down as secretary after many years and it is time for someone else to have a go. I have found it very worthwhile. Our next meeting will be held in the Library at 7 30pm Wednesday 28th April.
All Welcome!
And while on the subject of elections nomination forms for candidates for the triennial Board of Trustees election have been posted out to parents and caregivers and need to be returned to the returning officer by April 23rd. Please give this a lot of thought as your import could be very valuable.

ANZAC DAY OBSERVANCE
An invitation is extended to all residents of the wider district to join with the Sanson Ohakea R.S.A. at the Anzac Day observance on Sunday April 25th commencing with the parade assembling at the Sanson School gates, Wellington Rd at 9.15am. The Feilding Brass Band will lead the parade to the cenotaph for the laying of the wreaths, R.N.Z.A.F. fly past and the playing of the Last Post. Then to proceed to the Sanson Community Hall for the Civic Service led by Rev. Keith Edwards, vicar of St Thomas's Church, Sanson. His Worship the mayor of Manawatu District Council Mr. Ian McKelvie will deliver the address. At the conclusion of the service morning tea will be served in the supper room and a plate would be appreciated.

HORIZONS BUS SERVICE.
This bus leaves Sanson at 7 30am reaching Palmerston North at 5 to 8am
Return trip at 10 past 5pm reaching Sanson at 5.30 pm. Cost is $5 per trip.
Lots cheaper than running the car!
And are you aware that if you have a hospital appointment and you are not able to drive home afterwards you can ring St John's Shuttle Service? Phone 3235655

SANSON COMMUNITY LIBRARY
At last we have had our power problems sorted out and our computer and photo copier are up and running again. It has been a very frustrating time for us. Our next book change is on Wednesday 21st April at 10 30am and we appreciate all the help that we can get. If there is any book that you would like to read let us know and we will get it for you.
We are having a Holiday Programme for the children next week April 6th through to April 9th 10 am to midday. Under fives need a minder! No charge as all materials for crafts are supplied by Feilding Library.
Remember our photo copying and laminating services too!
Library hours are Monday and Thursday 10am to midday
Tuesday and Friday 2pm to 4pm
Saturday 11am to 1pm.

SANSON SUNDAY MARKET
The market is going very well and quite a lot of volunteer time is going in to running it. If you wish to have a casual stall you need to be there early like 7am and liaise with Sally or Mike who will show you where to set up. Sites are $15 each.
We invite applications for funding and application forms are available from me. We have set aside funding for Bulls Fire Brigade to install smoke alarms in all houses in the village. Funding has also been approved to go towards the swimming pool repainting. We have also given donations to the Play Centre, to the C.C.T.V.cameras and also the school to help with expenses for school camps.

SANSON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
Some of our night patrol are now part of Community Patrol New Zealand. They are a bit perturbed about the number of youngsters roaming the streets at night. Also older lads riding bikes on footpaths. The burglary at AG Traders has not been solved and if you have any helpful information Alan Aitken can be contacted on 027 818 2528 Somebody must know something!
