SANSON SNIPPETS

SANSON SNIPPETS
JULY 2007

This month’s Snippets comes to you courtesy of the Junction Motels where Robbie and Glenda Lammas are the friendly hosts assuring their guests of The Rest of your Journey! Warm comfortable units. Glenda and Robbie have also made a generous donation to Neighbourhood Watch, which has had its resources stretched recently with a spate of vandalism and kids behaving badly. Do parents know where their young ones are when they go roaming at night or more importantly do they care? The school has been hit several times lately and this is very frustrating. If you wish to donate to the night watch Del will be pleased to see you. Receipts are issued and donations are tax deductible. Robbie tells me that recently a truckie staying at the motels went out to his truck at 3 am and surprised a thief siphoning diesel into drums from his truck. He gave him a real fright and the thief absconded minus his two drums and garden hose and the worry that all other trucks in the area would be watching out for him. We are grateful to John, Reg and Joe for the work they do keeping us safe despite the weather but unfortunately the night watch cannot be everywhere.

CONDOLENCES
Another sad month with the passing of Beverley McPherson and Ron Scandlyn.
Though it is a few years since Bev lived in our village she had a lot of friends here. We extend sympathy to Tony, Fiona, Denise and Janine and their children in the loss of their mother and grandmother.
Ron’s death was a real shock to those of us who had seen him at the Sunday Market two days before he passed away in Wellington. Last year at the age of 80 years he had a trip to the U.S.A. fulfilling a dream that he had cherished for a long time. Several stories were told of Ron at his funeral, his love of his family and his penchant for collecting (good) junk and also his rather heavy foot on the accelerator of his Triumph car. When he obtained a B.M.W. recently this also caused him some trouble! A really good man, Ron. He will be sorely missed by his family and his many friends.

Chatting to Dave Pickles the other day and I was pleased to hear that he is making slow but steady progress towards recovery. His sense of humour is still intact! We hear that Mr. McGregor has been in hospital and we wish him and all the other residents who are on the not so well list all the best. We have many elderly people living in the village and it is good to know that many of you take an interest in the welfare of these people. We particularly commend Betty Absolom for her care and concern for several of them. Friends of Carol Swan will be relieved to know that she has improved somewhat and is still in Ward 29, Room 3 in the Palmerston North Public Hospital.

Who is the cruel person who dumped young kittens near the Cemetery? One is a tabby and white male, very affectionate and playful and free to a good home by contacting Shiree on phone 3293 667. Shiree already has several cats of her own and would prefer to hand him on. The other little ginger male was fortunate to be found on a very cold evening by a cat lover and has been given a good home. If you are the guilty person, shame on you!!

Many thanks to those of you who dropped of wool for my blankets. I feel truly blessed. I have one on display in the ARTITUDE GALLERY in the Golden Galleon building if you are interested to see what I am up to.

COMMUNITY LIBRARY
We have decided not to have a Holiday Programme these holidays for the first time since our Library opened all those years ago. We need some input from the younger mothers to help us run it. It is really good fun and very rewarding but I am not getting any younger and have lots of other things I want to do. Thank you to those of you who came and gave a hand with our recent book change. Some excellent titles in our latest lot and a great variety in both ordinary print and large print. Photo copying and Laminating available also the computer connected to Broadband. Apart from the encyclopedias available, Google Earth is great fun to roam the world! Denise has offered to open the Library on Wednesday evenings from 7pm. to 8pm.and this will start from July 3rd. Thank you Denise.
Library Hours

SANSON BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT ENTHUSIASTS
Recently many of us attended a meeting of this group at Brooklyn Tearooms.
On the agenda was the proposed community trust and new Ohakea Visitor Centre Development. This was hosted by Destination Manawatu and many worth while contributions were made. The main theme is to promote Sanson as the Gateway to the Manawatu and if anyone has bright ideas on how to go about this there will be another meeting very soon. Thank you to Elaine for the coffee and sandwiches.

SANSON COMMUNITY COMMITTEE
At our last meeting we discussed the outcomes of our submissions to M.D.C.’s Annual Plan. We are disappointed that there will be no footpath in Phillips St until the majority of the sections have been built on. The reason for deferring work is that trucks may damage it. We don’t think this is good enough. After all in Feilding developers have to put in kerb and channeling in new subdivisions first so why should Sanson be any different. We maintain that this street is a disgrace. We have also complained about the state of the Cemetery Rd drain that the contractors have not completed.
Our next meeting is on Wednesday July 25th at 7.30 pm. Apologies to those of you who arrived too early for our last meeting after I put the wrong start time in the Snippets. We thank you for your attendance. As I say time for someone else to write these notes!

Congratulations to Vi and Eric Henshaw who celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 20th. What an amazing achievement! We will miss them when they relocate to Auckland later this week. And we hear that Jill and Damien Duncan are shifting to Palmerston North this month. We wish these people all the best.
That’s it for this month.
