Sanson
Snippets

June 2008
This month's Snippets comes
to you courtesy of Crazy Sundae Café. Viv and Robin
and their two fabulous staff members Pauline and Michelle wish
to thank residents for their patronage over the last eighteen
months of operation. It was a real challenge to open the Ice Cream
Parlour and Lunch Bar and it has become great fun and they are
enjoying every minute of it. They are offering a 10% discount
on all items bought in June on production of this newsletter.
Judging by the enticing smells that drift out from their kitchen
they will have plenty of takers!
SANSONCOMMUNITY
COMMITTEE
At our last meeting it was confirmed that the Phillips St. footpath
will go ahead shortly and we can assure Hedges St residents that
we have not forgotten their needs. We also discussed the naming
of the lanes and more about that later. We are not happy about
M.D.C. responses to our concerns about the mowing of lawns and
spraying of lanes and drains around the village. We took five
submissions to the Annual Plan meeting and await responses. We
have a concern about the access lane from Shell Service Station
to Phillips St. and have asked for a Give Way sign there.
Next meeting in the Library at 7 30 pm on June 25th. All Welcome!
SANSON

HAPPY
BIRTHDAY MARGARET!
Mrs. Margaret Foster of Wilson Rd is celebrating her 90th birthday
on June 17th with family and friends and we wish her a wonderful
day! Margaret stills gardens and retains her driver's license,
takes an interest in what is going on about her and has a wonderful
sense of humour1
FEILDING

and Saturday 7th of June from 9am to 4pm. Entry is free and all

A LITTLE
BIT OF HISTORY!!
What an interesting exercise it was asking for street names for
the two sections of lanes which are the only vehicle access for
several residents. Thank you to those of you who returned your
slips. Among names suggested several times are Oppatt, Bowater,
Lammas, Thompson, Marsh and Bradnock. Nothing has been set in
stone yet and we are still open to suggestions. These names are
all old identities who owned land and often businesses in the
village. Older residents will be aware that the Oppatt family
owned quite a substantial section of land including where the
Caltex Service Station is located. In the Caltex Service Station
a bricked well was uncovered several years ago after staff became
aware that the floor was subsiding. This was the source of water
for the Oppatt family. Harry Oppatt also operated a second hand
shop where he sold all sorts of good junk. My late husband purchased
a clock there which originally hung in the old Junction Hotel
and it still keeps good time. The Bowater family is still represented
with descendents of daughters who married into the Williams and
Currie families. I well remember Oscar Bowater delivering mail
to the businesses in his little basket. When he and the late Ron
Scandlyn were boys they played tennis in the main street only
stopping for the occasional passing car. The Thompson family were
early settlers operating as metal contractors and provided the
metal for the village streets. The Lammas family is still represented
by Robbie Lammas owner of the Junction Motels. The late Allen
Nesbitt was a grandson of the Marsh family, also early settlers
and he was the first local man to enlist in World War 2. Mr. Richmond
Bradnock, who was the father of Mrs. Pat Walls, was the supplier
of fresh milk to the growing village milking up to eighteen cows
all year round. Pat who helped her father milk recalls being in
trouble at school for lateness.
Interesting to note that talking to Pat this morning her father's
original milking shed was sited in the lane behind where the Crazy
Sundae café is sited. We have had a wealth of worthy suggestions
from locals and we want to be sure that residents are happy with
the final decisions.
If I have got any of my facts wrong please let me know and ring
me on 3293674 if you have anything further to offer.
Pays to get up and investigate
if you hear unusual noises in the night! Maz who lives in Phillips
St. was astounded to find that some low life had attempted to
steal her car number plates during the night. No doubt planning
a drive through petrol theft1
Kim who can be contacted
on 3293432 is anxious to obtain something suitanble to turn into
a miniature train. If you have any suggestions she will be pleased
to hear from you. This could be an old disused ride-on mower for
instance. She is also still looking for a gig and harness for
her miniature pony.
That's it for this month!
