This month the Snippets

Edna who owns and operates the shop has a wide range of giftware
and local handcrafted items that caters for all tastes and budgets.
Edna looks forward to seeing Sanson people before Mother's Day,
May 11th with this month's Snippets to get a 10% discount on all
gifts for your mother or even your mother in law. Edna offers
friendly service, gift wrapping, layby and gift vouchers. There
is plenty of off street parking too. If you haven't checked Presence
in Sanson out before, please do so as you will be pleasantly surprised
at what your local gift shop has in store. Easy to find on the
main highway opposite the Sanson Club.
RONGOTEA
LIONS
We all appreciate the effort the Rongotea Lions put in to their
annual Waitangi Day Gala Day but how many of you realize that
every year they put on an afternoon tea and entertainment for
the older folk in the community at the Te Kawau Centre in Rongotea.
This was the first time I had attended and was greatly impressed
by the organization, which had been put in to make us all feel
welcome. There were quite a number of us from Sanson and it was
good to get around the room and have a chat with some of our oldies
and friends from Rongotea who we may not often see.
SANSON
COMMUNITY COMMITTEE
The Mayor Mr. Ian McKelvie attended our last meeting and we decided
that it is not worthwhile having a public meeting to discuss the
Annual Plan. Copies of the plan are available on
line or at the Council Office and you are invited to make
submissions by May 13th if you have any thing you feel strongly
about.
Our committee will be making various submissions about the walking
track, widening of Fagan St to the school, the exit lane from
Shell garage which we feel needs a give way sign etc. No 1 Lane,
which goes between Milne St and A'Court St, has two sections,
which are the only vehicle access for several residents. The section
behind the Golden Galleon building needs a name as does the section
between Fagan and A'Court St and residents are invited to submit
their ideas. As we know our streets are named after early settlers
in this area. Two names already mentioned are Bowater and Scandlyn.
Have you any ideas? We welcome your suggestions. Please use the
accompanying slip of paper to make your suggestion and return
to the Library. There is a return book slot there if the Library
is closed. The Golden Galleon was once an award winning restaurant
and perhaps this name could be perpetuated in this lane. It is
up to residents to decide so please have a think about this.
Good News! The Phillips St. footpath that we have been agitating
for is in this year's budget.
Next meeting 7.30pm Wednesday May 28th in the Library.
In these days of expensive
petrol why go elsewhere? Please support our local businesses!
RECYCLING CENTRE!
Would the person who left the stuffed goose
at
the Recycling Centre please show me where the sign that says 'Leave
your Unwanted Stuffed Goose Here.' is? As stated over and
over again ad nauseum if there is no sign for your unwanted items
don't leave them! We are so lucky to have such an easily accessible
centre to leave our recyclables it is a pity to have people abuse
it.
PERSONAL
We noted that several residents have suffered the loss of loved
ones this month and we send them our condolences. We wish Richard
McAlister all the best as he undergoes more surgery on his knee
this week. Good to see David Pickles's cheery face at the Anzac
Day Service.
Once again a big thank you to Mrs. Pat Walls who for many years
has assembled the wreaths for Anzac Day.
The Hall Committee wish to thank Robbie Lammas who installed a
new vanity unit at the Community Hall for us and to Mike Mullane
who repaired the large hole in the eastern facing wall. This involved
skill and a good head for heights!
We are fortunate to have community minded people who we can call
on for help when needed.
Pam Pees is celebrating her 80th birthday on May 15th and I hope
that if and when I reach that age I look as good as her!
We had a good response to our request for funds for Neighbourhood
watch and we thank those of you who responded so generously. And
to the two ladies who wish to remain anonymous thank you so much
for your kind donation.
Wanted known
The Sheepskin Shop's opening hours are now 9.30am to 4.30pm every
day except Wednesday when they are closed. They also trade in
Barter Cards.
A bit of History!
ST THOMAS'S ANGLICAN CHURCH
Work began on St Thomas's in April 1877. It should have started
earlier but the contractor whose lowest bid of £588 had
been accepted, failed to show up so the congregation stumped up
a further £2 for the Ellerm brothers Fred and Bert. who
had the job done in time for the consecration of the church by
Bishop Hadfield in November of that year. Remarkably, totara pegs
and dowels rather than nails were used to hold it all together.
The architect was Charles Tringham who also designed All Saints
Foxton and later gave up architecture for sheep farming. Although
the building being mid Victorian Gothic with tower, apse and sanctuary
appears more elaborate than most country churches it nevertheless
was designed to hold a congregation of only 120.
You are warmly invited to attend the monthly service held in this
church on the fourth Sunday of each month.
Please indicate your
preference for the naming of the service lane behind the Golden
Galleon building.
Please indicate your
