Sanson
Snippets

Sept 2008
This month's Snippets
come to you courtesy of Barry the owner of PASSIONZ in the Golden
Galleon building. Gloria and Sally will be pleased to show you
all the unique imported items they have. At present there are
a few lines with a 30% discount and these are great value. Some
of the jewellery is very suitable for the teenagers and is priced
to suit their pockets. A new shipment is due to arrive shortly
and is eagerly anticipated!
NEIGHBOURHOOD
SUPPORT
A meeting will be held in the supper room of the Community hall
on Tuesday September16th at 7.30 pm. The Manawatu co-ordinator
Alan Muntz will be in attendance. While we have night patrol men
doing an excellent job protecting our community we have been less
successful at setting up support groups. Your attendance does
not mean that you will be roped into a job! There will be a cup
of tea and bikkies afterwards.
SANSON COMMUNITY COMMITTEE
At our last meeting Dave Broderick of the Community Housing Trust
gave us an insight as to how this new trust will work and what
it will mean to the tenants of pensioner housing. At present there
are two units empty at Sandon Court. To meet the criteria for
renting, one must be a pensioner over 65, a war veteran or on
an invalid's benefit. Applications should be made to the M.D.C.
James O'Regan and I recently attended a Stakeholders meeting at
the Council and we found it very worthwhile. The format was different
to anything I had encountered before and instead of stating our
grievances verbally we were able to put unto writing everything
we were unhappy about in our village. Conversely we were also
encouraged to write what we were happy about. Our next meeting
will be in the Library at 7 30 pm Wednesday September 24th
All Welcome!
SANSON
COMMUNITY LIBRARY
The last holiday programme was not very well attended but we intend
to give it another go next holidays. School breaks up on September
26th and the programme will run from the 29th through to October
3rd . Great crafts and stories with all material provided by Feilding
Library. There are still a few books missing from our previous
book change and we would appreciate their return. Remember our
photo copying and laminating services.
Library Hours
Monday and Thursday 10 am to midday, Tuesday and Friday 2 pm to
4 pm
Saturday 11 am to 1 pm.
DOGS!!
Recently I was the victim of a dog attack and while it did not
damage me physically I am still shaken by the experience. Please
dog owners make sure that your dogs are secure and it would have
been nice to have received an apology from the dog owner concerned.
On a brighter note I am pleased to report that the M.D.C.and the
Dog Ranger acted promptly to my request for help.
ARTHRITIS SUFFERERS
Jenny Thomas of Arthritis N.Z. is holding a free clinic at the
Bulls Medical Centre on Monday September 15th from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Jenny will give advice on self management, diet, medication, joint
protection etc. She is also available to speak to organizations
and can be contacted on phone 3550435
WALKING
TRACK
We were very disappointed one Sunday recently to see a not so
young lad hooning up on the walking track. I believe that this
is his idea of fun but we are not amused. So if you are that fellow
on the green Kawasaki dirt bike be aware that the police have
been told about you. It is also an offence to hoon around the
village and it is not very clever to leave the crash helmet home!
And may we remind the Cemetery Rd. resident seen riding her horse
on the track that it is not a bridle path and please refrain.
Recently I had an out of towner say how lucky we are to have the
track and it is certainly a safe place to get exercise. We have
asked the Council to relime the original section of the track
and to make urgent repairs where water has scoured it out. Hopefully
the final section of the track will be completed next summer.
We have also asked the Council to provide a Doggy Doo bin by the
bridge.
RECYCLING
CENTRE.
Yet again we have had to dispose of other peoples rubbish at the
centre. Unfortunately for the culprit concerned amongst his rubbish
we found his firearms license so he will now know that it is cheaper
to go through the proper channels when disposing of rubbish. He
also could not be bothered to dispose of his empties into the
bottle bin but just left them beside the container. Sadly the
surveillance camera didn't pick him up. Since then we have noticed
an oil heater left there! WHY?
CRICKET FANS!
Chris Cairns as you may know is walking from Auckland to Christchurch
on a mission to raise funds and awareness for rail safety. As
you may recall his sister Louise was killed in a level crossing
accident fifteen years ago. He will be at the Shell shop at some
time between 2 and 3pm on Tuesday. He will then proceed to Palmerston
North and will be back at the Shell shop on Wednesday morning
between 8.30 am and 9.15 am before continuing on to Wellington.
Shell is one of the major sponsors of this walk and as such Chris
aims to start and finish each day at a Shell Shop. So if cricket
is your thing this is an opportunity to meet a wonderful cricketer
and at the same time support this good cause.
CONDOLENCES
To those of you who have lost loved ones recently we send our
sympathy. In particular to the Berquist family. Many residents
will remember their mother Mary who worked for the Manawatu County
Council for many years and at the time of amalgamation she took
charge of the local Council office which is now our Library.
SANSON
SCHOOL
Sanson school children are busy getting ready for their PREP day
on the last day of term September 25th This is being held in conjunction
with celebrations to mark the installation of the school's wind
turbine.
ARCHIVES
We are getting very excited about the photos and material we have
received for the archives. Ivan Staite has given us a copy of
the original survey map of the district and it is enlightening
to see how our streets were named after these early settlers.
We have a photo of a school class of 1909 or thereabouts with
all the pupils named. If you have any thing you think we may be
interested in please ring me on 3293674. We are anxious to get
photos of the Centenary Parade of 1973 and photos of original
buildings. As we get these all collated they will be available
to view at the Library. We intend to take photos of all the present
businesses and mark them 2008. Who knows what Sanson make look
like in fifty years time? Please get enthused and dig out those
old photos. Thanks to Ivan, Pam, Molly and Naomi for their contributions.
