Sanson Snippets

July 2009

This month's Snippets comes to you courtesy of Bev and Gavin Burling who own and operate the Sanson Antique Centre. Their shop is a real delight to visit particularly if you are interested in old jewellery, china, clocks etc. French furniture too, is a specialty. I love the fragrance of this shop with its well polished furniture!

The big news of the month is the imminent closing of the Caltex Service Station at the end of October. We feel for the nine employees who will lose their jobs and also wonder what will be the fate of the Postal Agency. We certainly do not need another empty building in the village.

CENTENARIAN!
Many of our readers will remember Mrs. Bessie Sanson who is celebrating her 100th birthday on July 5th. Bessie was the custodian of the old Sandon Hall and my children when they were young were convinced that she owned it, as she was so protective of it. She was also a craftswoman of great skill and her table at the Methodist Rose Show which was held for many years every November was always a great delight to see. Bessie's current address is Aroha Rest Home, 128 Monrad St. Palmerston North.

SANSON COMMUNITY COMMITTEE
At our last meeting we discussed among other things the quality of the town water supply in Phillips St. We were advised that residents with a specific complaint should contact the water manager at the M.D.C. Also discussion about our lack of progress with submissions to Council re widening of Fagan St. etc.
Our next meeting is in the Library at 7.30pm Wednesday July 22nd and all residents are invited to come along.

SANSON COMMUNITY LIBRARY
Thank you to those of you who came along to help with our latest book change. We are very fortunate that the Feilding Librarians make such a varied selection from their shelves for us. There are books on all sorts of subjects and if you can't find what you specifically want to read we can order it in for you. The service is completely free. We are learning to cope with our new photo-copier and our prices have had to be raised. 20 cents for the 1st A4 copy and 15 cents for each additional copy. 30 cents per A3 copy. Remember our computer is also available for residents to use.
We will be running a Holiday Programme for the children from July 6th through to the 10th. 10 30am to midday. .This is free as all material is provided by Feilding Library. Little ones bring a minder!

RECYCLING CENTRE
Sadly, I have to report that behaviour here has not improved. We know that a lot of our recyclers do not come from our village, in fact one lot of rubbish came from Waikanae and we hope that the evidence we were able to supply to the Council was enough to get them into trouble. You may be interested to know that the big container is emptied every Monday morning and on occasions has had to be emptied mid-week such is the enthusiasm of our residents.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
We have enough funds to buy another cell phone and a torch and all we need is another volunteer prepared to have a look around the village later in the evening. John and Reg do a wonderful job making sure the businesses are secure and checking the school and hall grounds. We are aware that the Bulls Night Patrol frequently have a drive around the village late at night and we are very grateful to all these wonderful volunteers.

SANSON SCHOOL
. A very successful disco was held last Friday Night in the Community Hall and thanks are due to the Friends of the School for putting this on for the children.
School breaks up for the holidays on Friday July 3rd and resumes on July 20th.

We have had a marvelous spell of really cold weather with beautiful days following very frosty mornings and the gardeners among us will be pleased at the inroads it has made to the bugs and caterpillars etc. but I was surprised to find millions of whitefly sheltering under the rhubarb leaves. Needless to say I dealt to them forthwith! Still it is sad to see the delicate plants that have succumbed to the frosts. I do have a problem with half an acre of paddock (adequately fenced) that needs a couple of sheep to keep the grass down. If anyone has a couple that they would lend me I would be very grateful.
