OCTOBER 2009

This month the Snippets come to you courtesy of Kevin of Weekend Craft who has shown faith in our village by shifting the manufacturing of his furniture business to Sanson. Shed Boss, who now have several examples of their designs in the village has supplied his new factory currently being erected. The building will be 15 metres by 12 metres and will go up very quickly once the weather improves.
And speaking of the weather I don't remember a September day like last Thursday when I burnt as much firewood in one day than I had burnt in the previous three weeks.

SANSON COMMUNITY COMMITTEE
There were only a few of us at our last meeting so we were able to get home in time to see the Silver Ferns best Australia! Nevertheless we covered a lot of ground and we have complained once again to the M.D.C. about the smelly drains in the village, which seems to be exacerbated by all the wet weather we have been having. We have received notification that our application for funding for a mural to be painted on the wall between the playground and the hotel building has been approved so now we want some of you artistic people to help with the project. Just give me a ring and I will put you in touch with the organizer. I hear that Council has taken the rat problem seriously and steps have been taken to deal with them. We never located the mats stolen from the Community Hall or the concrete blocks stolen from outside Ross Vile's property. If you know anything about these items we would be pleased to hear from you. They may seem to be only minor items but nevertheless still important to us. Our next meeting is in the Library at 7 30pm on Wednesday October 28th. All Welcome!

POSTAL AGENCY.
With the closing of Caltex at the end of this month we still have no idea where the private post boxes will go and it appears that we will have no postal agency either. I have made contact with the Manawatu Mail Centre and the District Council with the hope that something will be sorted out soon. I believe that there are 30 private box holders at the present time. Perhaps the best place would be part of the I-Site proposed for the hotel building but that appears to be still some time in the future. We do not want to lose the ability to buy stamps and post parcels in the village.

SANSON COMMUNITY LIBRARY
Time for the next book change and this will take place on Wednesday 14th October and if you are able to help on that day please come along at 10.30am. If you have any requests to make let us know in plenty of time. We are getting used to our new photocopier and its idiosyncrasies. It is so much more complicated than our old one but its one redeeming factor is the fact that it double-sides which has always been a cause of much frustration with the old one. Photo copying is 15c per copy for multiple copies and 20c for one. Laminating is 50c per sheet. Great for those favourite recipes or knitting patterns!
We have our holiday programme next week from 10 30 am to midday Monday the 5th October through to the 9th and all children are welcome. Parents are welcome to come long and help too. All materials are provided by Feilding Library and it is completely free.

Have you checked out David Pickles website sanson.net.co.nz yet? All sorts of information can be found there including David's weather station and the cameras taking photos of the main road.

SANSON SCHOOL
I really enjoyed the school production of Under the Big Top which was put on in the Hall on a recent Thursday evening. It was an absolute credit to the children, staff and Friends of the School. How they got the parachute up to form the circus tent I can't begin to imagine but it was truly spectacular. Good to see so many residents attending and enjoying the hotdogs, popcorn etc. provided for supper. The Kapa Haka and the rendition of Greased Lightning by the Rock'n Roll group was very well received and I hear that it was those two items that the school performed with so much credit at the Te Kawau Arts Festival recently in the Regent Theatre.
Agricultural and Craft day is scheduled for Wednesday 4th November and more about that next month.

SANSON COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL POOL
If you still have a key from last swimming season please return it to the school. Depending on the weather the pool will open at Labour weekend. This year the price for a season's key will rise by $10 to $60 for those who have had keys before and $72 for new keys. Costs of chemicals and power has risen significantly these last few years, We have approached the M.D.C. for more funding towards running costs and applications have been made for funding to do major renovations to the pool next winter. Several new members have joined the committee which will lighten the burden. Diane and her helpers are to be congratulated on the very successful fundraiser in the hall last Friday evening. This was the hangi meal and it was wonderful to have so many residents come along and enjoy the wonderful food that the committee and Friends of the School provided, Thanks are due to all those residents who donated meat, vegetables and firewood. After the dreadful weather on Thursday we were just a little bit worried about what the weather would do on Friday but the weather gods were kind to us!

SANSON CLUB
The club would like it known that their Melbourne Cup day will be held on Tuesday the 3rd of November and $2 and $5 sweepstakes will be organized. The club will be open by 4pm and this occasion is open to all residents. Food will be available in the form of Hot Meat Sandwiches and there will be the usual Best Hat competition for the ladies. Do come along and enjoy the occasion.

ANIMALS
It is usually dogs roaming that we complain about and we know that not much can be done to stop cats fouling in our gardens but at least with any luck they keep the mice down. Recently I had a goat in my garden and what a problem we had catching it. Other residents have complained about a chook scratching and befouling the place. To have good neighbours we need to be good neighbours and if we keep animals restrain them. As for me these days I only have goldfish and they are well behaved!

WILLIAMS FAMILY
Descendants of George Williams the first school teacher here in Sanson are holding a family reunion here at Labour weekend. The Williams family farm has been sold for lifestyle blocks over the last few years but the original house still remains on Cemetery Rd.
