Sanson Snippets

November 2010

This month the Snippets come to you courtesy of the Sanson Club (inc) which was formed in 1992 by some local residents who saw the need for a licensed club in the village. Over the years the membership has fallen but the club is still active and is seen as a place where family and friends can enjoy family get togethers and celebrations. Regular Inter-club pool games are held including games with the Palmerston North Deaf Association. A dart team is also based here with Provincial, National and World champions as members. Become a member and you automatically become an Associated member of the Sanson-Ohakea R.S.A. which entitles you to access to all R.S.A. Clubs in New Zealand and R.S.L. Clubs in Australia. The club owns the buildings and under the constitution should it be wound up all assets must be returned to the community.
MELBOURNE CUP DAY NOVEMBER 2ND
You are all invited to come to the club for the usual Melbourne Cup Fun Day activities. Cheap drinks, hot beef sandwiches available and the usual $2 and $5 sweeps. To have some fun get dressed up in suitable clothes and hats and there will be a prize for the best male and female attire. The bar opens at 3pm so you can prepare for the running of the Cup at approximately 5pm.
Look forward to seeing you there!!
New to the village and don't know where the club is? It is the last building on the left at the Bulls end of the village.

SANSON SCHOOL
I am writing this before the Annual Calf, Pet and Craft day and I hope you went along and enjoyed the day out. Did you see the photo in the Herald of the murals in the community hall? The Mayor Ian McKelvie unveiled them recently. The murals were all designed and painted by the pupils and are a real credit to them. The artist Eric Brew also showed us the plans for the mural to be painted on the white wall adjoining the playground. This will be painted by Eric assisted by the school children and local artists.
The school is looking for businesses to sponsor their weekly newsletter which goes out to all school families and can also be read on line at sanson.school.nz Sponsorship price is $150.
Upcoming events at the school are the Te Kawau Small School athletics to be held in Rongotea on November 8th and on November 15th the Te Kawau Athletics Championships will be held at Massey. I am sure that our local children will do us proud.
Recently I attended an eightieth birthday party at the Crazy Sundae and we were all impressed with the food (delicious) tea and coffee ( heavenly) and the attentive welcome we received from Viv and her staff. I can warmly recommend it as a party venue.

MEMORIAL WALL AND GATES AT OLD SCHOOL.
Kim the owner of this property told me that the Historic Places Trust visited recently with a view to register the gates. There is currently a preservation order on them. The trees planted too close to the wall in the fifties are now affecting the integrity of the wall and some are being removed. Kim has recently painted the wall and it looks really good.

SANSON COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL SWIMMING POOL
Have you returned your key from last season yet? Keys for this season can be obtained from the school office and I will have two keys for casual swims at my place which will be available for $5. The pool is looking really good after the big makeover this winter and just needs filling before it is ready to use. It is a credit to the pool committee who work really hard for our community.

CEMETERY RD. WALKING TRACK
Well at long last the track has been completed. This project started in the year 2000 when I presented a submission to the Council for a track to the Cemetery so we could all get a good walk without having to worry about the traffic on this narrow road. It has taken a long time to reach completion. We decided to have the track end before the last hill as the road is too narrow from that point. Several years ago, we as a community raised the last $3650 to get the last stretch completed and now it is done! Thanks go to James O'Regan for mowing beside the track and to Ed Hills for spraying to kill the paspalum that pops through from time to time. In fact over the years Ed has sprayed several times and we appreciate the help he has given us. Now all that remains to be done is for the Corrections Department guys on periodic detention to spread the lime that the Council has provided for resurfacing. With the long summer evenings coming up I expect to see Sanson residents take advantage of this great facility. And if you are exercising your dogs there, please take a pooper scooper. There is a Doggy doo bin beside the track.

I am too distressed to report on that other great facility the Recycling Centre and what people do or don't do there. Shame on you whoever you are!

Have you disposed of your old defunct coins in the Lions tin at the Library? The Lions won't mind if you put a few current coins in too!

Wanted Known.

FORMER CALTEX STATION SITE
Progress is being made on this site with the new truck stop installation going ahead. We await with interest what plans Cliff has for the building which he is currently refurbishing.

SANSON COMMUNITY COMMITTEE
We had intended at our October meeting to elect the new committee to carry on over the next three years but we were asked by M.D.C. to delay this until liaison councilors are appointed next month. So now we are unsure when the election will take place but be assured that it will be well advertised. Any resident can put their name forward for election. The next meeting will be held in the Library at 7 30pm on Wednesday November 24th. All Welcome.

SANSON COMMUNITY LIBRARY
It is gratifying to have several new borrowers join our Library. Thanks go to those who came to help with our recent book change. We have recently been donated a lot of N.Z. Gardener magazines and these are available for borrowers to take home and browse through. We are always looking for volunteers to take turns manning the Library. It is a great way to meet people so if you are interested give me a ring on 3293674.
Remember our photocopying and laminating services. Our prices are competitive.

That's it for this month.
