SANSON SNIPPETS
MAY 2011

SANSON COMMUNITY LIBRARY
This week we have had a book change of approximately 500 books from Feilding Library and all we need is for more residents to come along, join up and borrow them. Thank you to those who came along to help. Do you realize that we have an internet service that is free for you to use, the only charge is for printouts. I have heard it said that we are not open for long enough hours so if anybody wishes to extend the hours feel free to contact any of our volunteers. We also offer photo copying and laminating services at very reasonable rates. Once again we had good attendances at our Holiday Programme and thanks go to Joan, Bronwyn and the several parents who came along to help. Though the weather was appalling on the opening day the kids still came.
Library Hours are
Monday Thursday 10am to 12pm Tuesday Friday 2pm to 4pm Saturday 11am to 1pm

SANSON COMMUNITY COMMITTEE
The April meeting was held in the supper room and there was a reasonable attendance. Ross Brannigan the Civil Defence Officer for our region gave us an interesting insight to his work and the need for us all to be prepared for any contingency be it by earthquake, flood or any other natural disaster. His slide show showed us where known fault lines are in our area and where liquefaction may occur in the light of a major event. He also spoke about what preparation we all should make. Information booklets were handed out and I have left some in the Library for anyone interested to pick up.
Mayor Ian McKelvie spoke about the Annual Plan and the need for residents to put their wishes in as submissions to Council. He also spoke about boundary changes, recycling, the hotel project, earthquake proofing of susceptible buildings and the discrete funding of $2700 which will be made available to the Committee for any project we may wish. Please if you have any thoughts on this spending leave your ideas at the Library. Minutes of the meeting may be read at the Library. They are also available on the Sanson website. The next meeting will be in the supper room at the Community Hall May 25th at 7 30pm.

SANSON SCHOOL GALA DAY
The school is very happy to report that they held a successful Gala Day on April 10th and the amount raised was approximately $1600. They thank all their supporters.
The raffle results were as follows.
1st prize (Seat donated by Weekend Craft) Hazelgrove family.
2nd prize ($100 gift cards donated by Shell Sanson) Del Parker.
3rd prize ($50 donated by Harris Contracting) Carol Walker.
Easter baskets were won by Reg Te Whata and Raewyn Symons.
ANZAC DAY
After the beautiful weather on Sunday what a pity it rained on Anzac Day but nevertheless we had a good turnout for this commemoration. Rather than everybody getting soaked we dispensed with the march and instead laid the wreathes in the hall. The Rev Elizabeth Boddy led the service and Councillor Margaret Kouvelis gave a thought provoking address. Mention was made of the passing as a result of acciden,t of Lois Thacker who for many years has played the piano for us. We are so fortunate to have the services of the Feilding Brass Band who support us each year.

SANSON CLUB INC
Members please note the Club's A.G.M. will be held in the Club at 3pm on Sunday May 29th . Members are requested to attend.

After many years I have decided to retire from writing the Snippets each month and I now gracefully and gratefully hand them over to the next generation who I am sure are far more able than I. Hopefully readers will contact me with the news and I will pass it on to the new editor so please keep it coming. I have enjoyed the contact that I have had with so many of you and thank you for the nice words you have said about the Snippets. I first started writing them when Doug Thorley was our liaison councillor and he suggested that Community news needed to get out to the village. I wrote them in longhand and first Cath Purdie printed them up. Later it was Linda Davis and later again it was Denise Tanner. Then I decided that I needed a computer to do it all myself and so the fight with technology began. Oh, the problems with the old Microsoft Works and a printer that gave me no end of problems. In 2001 I updated my computer, wrecked the printer (ran out of ink!) and changed to a later version of Microsoft Office. David Pickles asked me to send them to his sanson net and so the Snippets have appeared on the net regularly ever since. Over the years I have made a lot of mistakes generally with dates or phone numbers and I apologise. I also stated that when the Sheepskin Shop closed that their products could be obtained from the tannery at Oroua Downs. Alas! That is the opposition. Bother!!
Every month I have had a sponsor and I thank all those businesses and other residents who have sponsored it from time to time. I believe that I have been very lucky with the support I have had. Each month I post the Snippets out to a number of ex residents and this will continue.

I would dearly like to know who put an anonymous note in my neighbour's letter-box complaining about her dog Jolie barking and causing Pat considerable upset. There are lots of barking dogs in this village but the wrong one has been picked on here. Next time you set out to upset someone do the decent thing and sign your name!

Bulls Rubbish Dump opening hours
Monday, Wednesday and Friday 7.30am to 11am
Saturday and Sunday 8am to 3pm
Tuesday and Thursday closed.

And while on the subject of rubbish please do not leave it at the Recycling Centre!
Those of us who don't just moan about things but get cracking and do something are fed up with picking up bags of rubbish at the Recycling Centre. We filled three bags one Wednesday and amongst that were food scraps! And who left the mattress there? We know that out of towners use this facility but we can't blame it all on them. We will be putting in a submission to council for a camera to be connected to the Hall and School security cameras to keep an eye on the place.
